About Us

The National Council of Jewellery Valuers (NCJV) is Australia’s only professional organisation where members are trained to a recognised standard and committed to ongoing professional development. This ensures our members provide reports of a high standard and remain informed about the latest market trends, gemstone treatments and other factors that influence value.

History

Established in 1984 by a dedicated group of professional jewellery valuers, the NCJV was created to uphold and advance the highest standards of jewellery valuation in Australia. From its inception, the Council has emphasised the importance of continuous education, grounded in scientific analysis and specialist industry expertise. This commitment sets NCJV members apart, particularly given that, under current Australian law, tertiary qualifications are not required to practise as a jewellery valuer.

Today, the NCJV represents over 2,000 retail outlets nationwide, with our members conducting nearly two million valuations annually.

Member Training.

Achieving status as an NCJV Registered Valuer™ requires significant dedication. Our comprehensive training encompasses key areas of gemmology, including gemstone grading, identification of synthetic stones, and the precise valuation of a broad range of items—from antique jewellery and timepieces to precious metal alloys.

To maintain membership, NCJV Registered Valuers™ are required to keep up to date with ongoing professional development. Failure to meet this obligation may result in the loss of membership, underscoring our commitment to excellence and the highest standards of professional integrity.
